The Challenge
The Powhatan War Memorial, Cultural Arts, & Community Center has stood at the heart of Powhatan County for over 75 years. Originally built in 1950 through a remarkable act of community will — citizen-funded bonds, local business donations, dances, and dinners — the center has served generations as a gathering place for everything from high school proms to Masonic lodge meetings to youth sports.
But decades of institutional drift had left this beloved landmark with a confusing website, a struggling social presence, and without the operational systems needed to generate sustainable revenue for the near and far future. The center was largely invisible to the very community it was built to serve. Classes went unfilled. Events went unannounced. And a building that once rallied an entire county now struggled to stay solvent.
The mission was clear: transform the War Memorial from Powhatan's hidden gem into the shining gem in Powhatan's crown — and build the financial foundation to restore and expand it for the next 75 years.
The Strategy
1. Establish a brand identity and digital home base
Built a new Squarespace website anchored by the center's mission: Where Community Gathers, Memory Lives
Developed a cohesive visual identity in Canva — honoring the center's civic heritage while presenting it as a vibrant, active community space
Created clear, navigable pathways for classes, events, rentals, and donations
2. Launch a social media presence from next to zero
Established brand-aligned accounts and content cadence across key platforms
Developed content pillars rooted in community storytelling, event promotion, and local history
Used the center's rich 75-year narrative as organic content fuel
3. Build a lean operational system for classes & registration
Implemented Airtable as a lightweight CRM and registration hub — purpose-built for a small nonprofit team
Created streamlined class registration flows, reducing friction for both participants and staff
Designed a programming framework to make the center's calendar consistent, visible, and revenue-generating
4. Develop an event strategy anchored in fundraising
Mapped a tiered event programming approach — community gatherings, mid-scale ticketed events, and large-scale fundraising campaigns
Designed each event tier to both serve the community and generate unrestricted operating revenue
Established sponsorship and partnership frameworks to engage local businesses in the center's revival
The Results
This engagement is ongoing. Proposals have been approved, and implementation is underway. Projected outcomes include:
✅ A fully launched digital presence replacing years of zero online visibility
✅ Operational class registration system reducing admin burden and increasing enrollment
✅ Event programming pipeline designed to generate sustainable fundraising revenue
✅ Brand foundation that honors 75 years of civic history while positioning the center for the next chapter
✅ Lean, scalable infrastructure built entirely on accessible tools — proving that meaningful impact doesn't require a big budget
